Rad Wednesday and A Visit From China Peak

Ok lets start this blog post off right…Why was Wednesday Rad you ask?

MARISSA PASSED THE $2000 MARK ON HER DONATION METER.
Yeah, that means 6,000 pounds of food. 8,000 meals.
Thank you to all of the people that have supported her and donated to her campaign.

Sooooo much happened yesterday. We finalized the “Marissa Hushaw Grind Out Hunger Rail Jam” poster. Its already started floating around the web. Another blog will be posted with more detail about that event soon.
GOH team and Marissa met up to hang out and so Marissa could pick up a stack of posters to put around town and up at China Peak Mountain Resort. Marissa kindly signed a few of the posters, one of which is now framed and in the current GOH HQ office. Thanks, Marissa!

We also had a great surprise last night, Trey Lull, repair technician at China Peak along with Brittany Kitchen, snowboard instructor and competitor drove to Santa Cruz to pay us a visit.
Trey Lull….this guy is da man! He and his crew donate a portion of their tips from their work to Marissa’s Campaign. They have donated hundreds of pounds of food already through monetary donations.  We met up at Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, chatted for a big then took a walk down to Pleasure point to check out the sunset and the surf.

Oh and we forgot to mention that the BodyGlove Surf Team decided to stop by Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop last night. China Peak + Marissa Hushaw + Pro Surfers + Grind Out Hunger + Santa Cruz = an amazing evening.

Thanks again for everyone’s support!

Blue Weekend Benefit Show Raises 300 Pounds!

This past Sunday local band, Blue Weekend played a benefit show for Grind Out Hunger at the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop. The show began at about 7pm and the played a 45 minute set. They played a bunch of original songs as well as covers by bands such as Green Day and Social Distortion. Kids came to listen, skate LOT F, hang out…people were playing ping-pong, pool, foosball and just relaxing on a Sunday evening all in support of Grind Out Hunger and the youth of Santa Cruz County. With the combo of cash and canned food donations the total came out to just over 300 pounds of food!
After the show the band approached us and asked when they could do this again…another show featuring Blue Weekend is in the works. Stay tuned…

Big thanks to the Skate Shop and their staff for hosting the event, thanks to the band for ROCKING, and to everyone that came to support.

Next up, at the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, we have SPINFARM and Aptos Jr. High’s WHIPLASH playing on Saturday, March 10th.
Look out for details about that show coming very soon.

Thank you to everyone that came to the show on Sunday to support Blue Weekend and Grind Out Hunger. We had a blast and cant wait to do it again!

KZSC 88.1 does an interview with Grind Out Hunger Founder Danny Keith

KZSC 88.1

Grind Out Hunger founder, Danny Keith and Grind Out Hunger Program Coordinator, Shawn Hatjes were invited by Melissa Stone to join her on her morning radio show on KZSC. They spoke about the Grind Out Hunger program, how it began and where it is going. The radio show along with info about the Grind Out Hunger program can be found below.

With 1 in 4 children going food insecure in Santa Cruz County and over 55,000 people a month needing emergency food support, Grind Out Hunger in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County is doing everything it can to “educate and involve the community to end hunger and malnutrition”. Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County distributes over 700,000 pounds of food per month with over half being fresh fruit and produce through 200 member agencies and food for children distributions.

Grind Out Hunger was created through the vision of skateboarders helping kids overcome hunger. Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop founded Grind Out Hunger with the goal of inspiring kids to help kids; Danny Keith mentions “by going directly to the schools and talking with the kids, it has a huge impact.” Grind Out Hunger is an educational piece challenging local elementary, middle and high schools to raise food and money for hungry children in the community. Since the inception of Grind Out Hunger the youth of Santa Cruz County has collected over 1 million pounds of food for working poor families and children.

“The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they – at some distant point in the future – will take over the reigns. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely… because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties. For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile.”quote by Alvin Toffler
