Right in the thick of award season, Santa Cruz NEXT is slowing down to appreciate Santa Cruz now, at least insofar as honoring current members who’ve done outstanding work here in the community, with the first annual NEXTies Awards. “We want to emphasize there are people here that are world–renowned, who are making a life here in Santa Cruz and enjoying every minute of it, and having a really positive impact on our community,” says Santa Cruz NEXT member and city councilman Ryan Coonerty, pausing before adding, “and we also hope that it’s going to be the best party of the year.”

He’s expecting plenty of local hotshots dressed to the nines for the ceremony honoring the four chosen winners: Danny Keith of Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, astrophysicist Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz of UCSC, Reyna Ruiz of Beach Flats Community Center and Marina Sousa, owner of Just Cakes in Capitola. “I’m definitely honored,” says Sousa. “I just think everybody else that is getting this award does amazing things, and there’s part of me that feels a little bit silly because I just make cakes.”

Well, she “just makes cakes” for Oprah Winfrey and the Food Network, but Coonerty says Sousa embodies an important aspect of the NEXTies. “She’s a great example of someone who could choose to live anywhere they want, but makes their home here,” he says.

Keith is being feted not just for his professional success, but for his organization Grind Out Hunger, which incentivizes local elementary, middle and high schoolers to participate in Second Harvest food drives. “I think [Santa Cruz has] a good mixture of live and let live, at the same time encouraging entrepreneurship and out-of-the-box ideas,” says Keith, whose efforts helped to raise 116,853 pounds of food during the 2009-2010 holiday food drive. “We’re [also] very aware of our problems, and the way we deal with it is unique. We care about our neighbors in Santa Cruz. Most communities have lost that.”

Packard Fellowship winner Ramirez-Ruiz will take home a NEXTie for his success as a world-renowned astrophysicist as well as a founder of the Lamat (Mayan Star) fellowship, which provides an immersive introduction to the astrophysics program at UCSC for Hartnell Community College students. And finally, Reyna Ruiz, director of the Beach Flats Community Center, will be recognized for raising $130,000 in individual donations and grants for a mind-blowing reversal of the center’s fate after the city declared its budget crisis would shutter it. “Failure was not an option,” she says. “I don’t believe in sheer luck. You make a plan, you surround yourself with the best and the brightest and people that believe in the cause. In this case, it was social justice—the families that are the most vulnerable in the city.”

All four will receive brushed stainless steel awards created by Chris Yonge from Studio Cruz at the former Wrigley Building, which Santa Cruz NEXT spokesperson Peter Koht says will be tricked out with a digital media makeover. “It’s not going to feel like an old gum factory,” he promises.

Here’s to high NEXTpectations.

The First Annual NEXTies take place Saturday, Jan. 23, 7pm at 2801 Mission St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $35 ($60 for two; $45 at the door) at http://www.NEXTies.Eventbright.com.

Aptos Jr. High presents HUGE check to Grind Out Hunger

Interesting story here, on my rounds this season I stopped in a school by the name of Aptos Jr. High…now I like to consider myself a pretty entertaining speaker and can work any crowd. In the case of AJH it felt like I bombed when I walked out of there. Fast forward a month,  I am standing in the Aptos Safeway when two AJH 8th grade girls approach me as Mr. Grind Out Hunger and begin to tell me how they are raising a ton of food and money and they are totally going to crush the 7th graders….I didn’t know if they were kidding or if they were serious as they were so full of energy I figured they were just having fun with me…wellllll was I wrong. 3 days ago I get a call from Bly at the Second Harvest Food Bank with the news…”Hey Aptos Jr High wants to do a check presentation on Wednesday morning and needs you there”…of course I oblige as we had already done a few of these presentations over the last few weeks.  Bly continues “Oh yeah by the way,  Aptos Jr. High’s check is for $2166 and they filled over 10 barrels of food….” I quickly crunched the numbers ($1 = 3lbs etc) and realized they had raised over 7,800lbs of food and almost $19,000 worth of purchase power!!!! I ran back to look and sure enough last years numbers “0″…these kids had gone from “0″ to 7,800lbs in one year….AMAZING  There was a contest between 7th and 8th grade and I heard that the 7th graders lost by $21…now they have to sit on the floor during assembly and the 8th graders get the bleachers…but everyone gets an Ice Cream party…count me in! Aptos Jr. High great job and keep your heads up!

Grind Out Hunger inspires donate food birthday party celebration

I know I have mentioned over and over how Grind Out Hunger is starting to branch out past its original intentions…I never thought I would see the day that good friends decided to pick up the challenge and combine their birthday parties, invite everyone they can think of and request “NO GIFTS” only food to be donated.  So we headed over to La Torta Gorda and feasted on Carne Asada fries and incredible Torta’s…Being that these are great friends I knew they would come through, and I wasn’t disappointed with two full cans (250 lbs!!!) it is incredible what a movement can create.  I have the best friends in the world,  Happy Birthday to Kari, Ray and Dave all of whom went without so that someone else didn’t have to…once again I am completely floored at how people can make a difference.

Kari…thank you again for this idea and hopefully it will inspire others.

P.S. I cannot forget to mention that Ray managed to Beat the La Torta Gorda challenge…that was allot of food!

Santa Cruz Sentinel Thanksgiving Day Article

Capitola skateboarder Danny Keith helps the Second Harvest Food Bank collect food for the needy

By ROMAIN FONSEGRIVES

Posted: 11/26/2009 01:30:11 AM PST

WATSONVILLE — Danny Keith felt a sense of accomplishment Wednesday as he watched 30 volunteers at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Watsonville sort through food about to be delivered to the hungry for Thanksgiving.

That’s because much of it was raised through his charity, Grind Out Hunger.

“We’re visiting local schools throughout the county, and we get as many kids as we can to raise as much pounds per student per school as possible,” said Keith, owner of the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop in Capitola. “Then the store offers a prize back for the best high, middle and elementary schools.”

The charity’s logo — a skateboarder carving into a bowl while holding a food bag — and name sum up Keith’s spirit. With his cool cap and sunglasses, the long-haired 40-year-old, who formed the charity in 2004, catches kids’ attention. Speaking their language, Keith knows how to raise their interest in issues like hunger.

“It is amazing to see Danny with the kids,” said Bly Morales, food drive and events manager for the food bank. “He’s like a rock star to them.”

It all started with a couple of barrels in Keith’s 41st Avenue skateshop a few years ago. Each holiday season, he gave discounts to customers who filled them with food for the needy. But the barrels remained half empty, Keith said. He decided to ramp it up.

“If I couldn’t do it in my shop, I needed to take it directly to the kids,” Keith said. “That’s how I came up with the idea of Grind Out Hunger.
Each year, Keith creates a special Grind Out Hunger deck he sells for $100. He gives the money earned from the sales to the food bank, he said.

Keith thinks the initiative is successful in schools because it is an extension of the skateboarding spirit — sticking together and taking care of your own.

“When I’m talking to a class, the first kids to react are skateboarders,” Keith said. “And somehow it just emanates out to other kids in the school.”

The charity has teamed up with the Second Harvest Food Bank since 2004. Working with more than 180 local agencies, the charity collects, sorts and distributes food throughout the county.

“It’s really good having that kind of guy helping us out,” Morales said.

With the goal of collecting 2 million pounds of food during this year’s holiday season, volunteers and workers at the food bank are working harder than ever, according to Morales. Even though she does not have results yet, as the holiday season is just beginning, Morales said she believes in the community’s generosity and expects Second Harvest to reach its goal.

A Watsonville resident, Morales has worked for the food bank for the past two years and is concerned by the significant increase of people in need. The number of people asking for food has jumped 30 percent compared to last year, she said. Morales has even seen previous donors coming to the charity and asking for food this year, she said.

“When I started Grind Out Hunger, the food bank served 30,000 people a month. Now it has jumped to 60,000 a month” Keith said. “It means one in four children is going hungry, so we really have to do our best.”

Grind Out Hunger is touring in more than 50 schools this season, Keith said. After collecting 60,000 pounds of food in 2008, Keith’s objective this year is to jump up to 100,000 pounds.

The campaign is more rewarding than owning the shop, Keith said, and he vowed the Grind Out Hunger effort should continue as long as people go hungry.

“I’d rather go skateboarding or surfing but as long as people need our help, I’ll be here a 100 percent,” Keith said.
