HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARISSA!

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARISSA!

Now that snow has been falling so much has been going in in the world of Hunger Fighter, Marissa Hushaw. This past weekend Marissa went up to China Peak to compete in Round 2 of CCSSS. She took 1st place in heats 1 and 2 BoarderX with a 2nd place finishing the final (Leading points now for the season).  She is blazing fast and has won 1st in the CCSSS GS competition. Marissa also took the 1st Wild Card for the Pro Snowboarder Andy Finch Invitational Slope Style Park event coming up (Female division). She was stoked when they called her over and gave the card and 1st entry.
Congrats on the wins, Marissa!

We sat down and asked Marissa “why are you so passionate about Grind Out Hunger?”. Her answer was nothing less than inspirational.
Check it out:

“Grind Out Hunger is first about showing kids that they can make a difference. Not just in their own lives, but they can change others. Learning the fact that one out of four people in my own community are malnourished, and go hungry every day really got to me. Not only does Grind Out Hunger provide nutritious food, but it provides a source of education to teach people how to choose and consume healthy foods. One tiny act of kindness from kids or adults will NOT go unrecognized. It makes you feel great when you know that you are helping to feed the people who live in your own community. Not only does it give them hope and strength, but it gives you community hope as well. Hope can be contagious! It spreads all throughout ones self and rubs off on others. One tiny spark of hope can make a colossal difference. I know that I have the power to make a difference, but I know that I can’t do it alone.”

Marissa Hushaw’s Birthday Wish…

Anyone know what February 14th is!? Yes, Valentines Day, but it’s also Marissa Hushaw’s 15th Birthday!!!

We sat down and talked with her for a bit asking her what she’s wanting for her birthday. She responded by saying that she wanted to use her birthday as a day to raise food for kids in need.

She came to the decision that the ONLY wish she has for her birthday to raise $200 (600 pounds of food)  for Grind Out Hunger.

We looked at that and started breaking down the numbers. If 20 people donated $10 to her online campaign, her wish would be fulfilled.
Marissa believes that her community,  family, and friends can make this happen, no problem.
So, LETS DO IT!

There are two ways YOU can help Marissa’s Birthday wish come true:

1. Donate Online Here

2. Order a Special Edition Marissa Hushaw/Grind Out Hunger Wristband

Any and all donations are greatly appreciated no matter how big or small.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARISSA!

Marissa Hushaw – Hunger Fighter

When Marissa Hushaw came into the Grind Out Hunger Headquarters last Thursday she had no idea what she was getting herself into. We informed her that we were filming a video featuring her representing Grind Out Hunger, but she wasn’t sure what the setup was going to be like, or what we were asking her to do. When she got here we gave her a tour of the Food Bank so she could see the facility and what she is working so hard for. After the tour she was fried up and ready to get to filming. She now had a clear idea of what she is supporting and wanted to get that message out to her peers throughout Santa Cruz County.

We took her into our small conference room, which we cleared and turned into a filming studio just hours before. Lights, camera, action…we sat her down in a chair and flipped the camera on.

“Are we recording?” she asked.
“Yup.”, we responded.
“But what am i supposed to say?”
“Anything…”

She started talking freely about Grind Out Hunger and how she is stoked on helping feed kids in Santa Cruz County and beyond….we shot about 45 minutes of video and edited it down to a 30 second clip.

After recording we hung out and shot some photos. There were definitely many laughs. Working with Marissa and having her on our team is truly a blessing.

Update from the Mountain: China Peak Exploding with Grind Out Hunger Support

We were contacted by Marissa recently with an update of her China Peak Adventures….

Marissa signed up for her CCSSS (Central Coast Ski & Snowboard Series) this past weekend. Now that she is a “big” freshman in high school she can compete at a new level. Marissa is going for Slopestyle Parks and BoarderX this season.

Her first competition is scheduled for January 22nd, 2012 with her bib # being #1 , ha! Rad!

We will be sure to fill you in with all of the competition details as they are shared with us.

China Peak ran an “Amazing Race” style contest all over the mountain this past weekend. Riders (Ski and Snowboarders) took off individually for a hunt with clues to where Nestle Chocolate milks were stashed all over the mountain top to bottom. Marissa cleaned house and brought back five of the ten (Four with winning stars on the bottom)…she won a China Peak gift card, Complete Ski/Board tune up, a Vew-Do Progression training board and a t-shirt! Way to go, Marissa!

It seems as if the news of Marissa’s involvement with Grind Out Hunger is spreading like wildfire! The China Peak Tune & Repair shop came out and said they read Marissa’s Santa Cruz community service campaign with Second Harvest Food Bank and Grind Out Hunger. They supported her 110% and offered to donate ALL of their tips this year to her goal. Marissa, being the kid hearted person she is, expressed her gratitude and explained that even just a portion of their tips would be greatly appreciated. The Tune and Repair shop now has a Grind Out Hunger sticker slapped on their window to show their support.

You can help marissa reach her goal by following the button below. Be sure to be on the look out for more updates about her fight against hunger!
