Grind Out Hunger Food Drive to Kick-off at SC County Fair

It’s that time again folks! The Santa Cruz County Fair is coming to town and that means its the official kick off for the Grind Out Hunger Food Drive! We will be there with our mini half pipe to collect can donations from participating Elementary schools. We will have a table set up with tons of info as well as a place to accept monetary donation. Oh and did we mention we will have Grind Out Hunger wristbands available?

We will be keeping track of every pound of food donated by participating schools.  Those numbers will be consolidated into each schools overall Grind Out Hungern Food Drive donations, as well as the overall numbers for 2011.  Participating in the Grind Out Hunger Kick-Off is an easy way to get started early on boosting your school’s annual Holiday Food Drive numbers!

Last year, our 2010 goal was to raise 250,000 pounds of food, which we beat with a total of 278,616 pounds. We are raising the bar this year and setting our goal at 500,000 pounds! Think we can do it!?! We do!

Mini Half Pipe used to collect can food donations.

Grind Out Hunger food drive is a competition between schools challenging them to raise the most amount of pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. The great thing about this competition is that, in the end, we are all working towards the same goal, to provide food for kids in need. Think your school has what it takes?
The schools that raise the top amount of pounds will be awarded Grind Out Hunger trophies as well as gift certificates to Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop.

Check out last year’s award winners: http://grindouthunger.org/2010-2/2010-awards/

Check out the list of schools that participated last year: http://grindouthunger.org/2010-2/
Is your school on the list? Think you can beat the amount you raised in 2010!?!

We are already seeing motivation from old schools and new schools as they prepare for the Grind Out Hunger food drive. We’ve already sat down with Aptos High School and have been contacted by Cypress Charter High School, Monterey Coast Prep and St Francis High School.

Whole Foods B-day Bash Raises 2000Lbs

Whole Foods Capitola celebrated its 2nd birthday on Saturday in their parking lot under the summer sun.

The sun was shining Saturday, perfect weather for Whole Foods Capitola to celebrate their 2nd birthday. The store blocked off half of their parking lot to set up dozens of tents for vendors, a BBQ, beer garden, karaoke, photo booth and more. The photo booth was loved by everyone that come to the birthday bash. Adults, kids, families and friends crammed themselves into the booth to get their photo taken and printed at no cost. Hula hoops were also available for anyone to pick up and go crazy with while listening to the karaoke hosted by Karaoke Sound Co. We were impressed by some of the talent that took the stage and sang karaoke in front of everyone at the party.

Hula Hooping was a one of the many activities people could participate in at the party.

There was a beer garden sectioned off at the event for those who were 21+. Adults were able to taste beer and socialize with each other and the vendors. 100% of the proceeds from the beer garden were donated to Grind Out hunger. The total amount of pounds raised for Grind Out Hunger ended up being 2000!
Big thanks to all of the beer vendors that showed up to help support the cause.

100% of the proceeds from the Beer Garden benefited Grind Out Hunger

Oh and did we mention that there were 2 baby cows from as local dairy farm!?!
Yeah…adorable. The kids loved them.

2 Baby cows from a local dairy farm kept the children entertained.

Some of the many vendors at the bash included: Patch.com, Oxylent, Odwalla, Martinellis, Surf City Coffee, Pop Chips, Sierra Nevada, Uncommon Brewers, and many more…

Big thanks to the Whole Foods Capitola team, Melissa McConville for making this B-day Bash possible, all the vendors, and everyone that came out to support Whole Foods and Grind Out Hunger.

Whole Foods provided free cupcakes in celebration of their 2nd birthday.

Whole Foods Luau Raises 2000Lbs

Aloha Everyone! We hope you all had a wonderful and safe 4th of July Weekend!

Last Friday Whole Foods-Capitola kicked off the weekend with a family fun Luau. For 3 hours adults and kids were able to enter a transformed section of the Whole Foods parking lot to enjoy drinks, food, music, and community. It was a wonderful way for families to kick off the 4th of July weekend.

The event ended up raising 2000 pounds for Grind Out Hunger! How awesome is that!?!

Local band, Island Breeze, performed Hawiian/surf tunes during the Luau.

The live music by local Hawaiian/tropical/surf band Island Breeze attracted people walking by or on their way back to their cars in the parking lot. Everyone had to check out what was going on and eventually  jumped in to join the fun.

The food, provided by Whole Foods, was delicious. The Menu offered Hawaiian inspired items including; pulled Pork Sandwiches, grilled pineapple, macaroni Salad, fresh fruit salad, and upsidedown cake with pineapple. Big thanks to the cooking crew at Whole Foods! Everyone loved the menu options.

The event was full of wine and beer vendors for the adults to enjoy. Shout out to all of the vendors that came out to join the party!
Breweries and Wineries included:

Robert Hall
Martin Ranch Winery
Lagunitas
Lost Coast Brewery
Bonny Doon Vineyard
Grgich Wine Cellers
Cinnabar Winery
Terra Savia
