Santa Cruz Sentinel covers Tarp Surfing event for 9/6

Riding the tarp-surfing tsunami for a good cause

SANTA CRUZ — For years, the Grind Out Hunger campaign has been asking kids to fill barrels with food donations. Now, to get them to donate over the Labor Day Weekend, it’s offering to put them in a barrel — a plastic, blue, “surfable” barrel.

Riding the wave of a recent worldwide tarp surfing trend that began here in Santa Cruz, Grind Out Hunger will host an event Monday where kids can donate either a pound of food or $3 for a ride through what campaign founder Danny Keith calls “massive, kegging tarps.” The event will be held in the parking lot behind Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop on 41st Avenue and will run from noon-3 p.m. All food will go to Second Harvest Food Bank, and cash donations will be split between the food bank and local youth nonprofit, The Core.

“I think there’s other boring events kids are going to get dragged to this weekend,” said Keith, who also owns the skate and surf shop. “But kids would probably rather be tarp surfing than going to an airshow — I’m just saying.”

Started in 2004, Grind Out Hunger aims to get kids in local schools to donate food to other kids in need. More than 500,000 pounds of food have been raised through the campaign, Keith said. As incentive, Keith gives winning schools gift certificates to his shop.

More than 150 people have confirmed they will attend, according to the event’s Facebook page, and more than 200 are listed as maybe.

“At first, I didn’t think it was going to be that big of a deal,”  Keith said. “Now, I’m getting calls from people in San Francisco asking if the event is going on.”

Grind Out Hunger works closely with Second Harvest, which feeds about 60,000 people each month, said Bly Morales, the bank’s food drives and events manager.

“Any way we can get people involved is a good thing,” she said. “I’m going to be taking my son out there.”

Tarp surfing requires one person to run and pull the corner of a big, blue tarp. A tube is formed and another person can then ride a skateboard in and get “barreled” much like a real wave.

A tarp surfing tsunami has formed worldwide since well-known local surfers Homer Henard, Omar Etcheverry and Nic Lamb and friend Chris Killen released a spoof video on YouTube on July 19. Henard, Etcheverry and Killen will all be pulling tarps Monday.

Their video has received nearly 2 million hits, and media outlets throughout the world continue to contact them for interviews and TV segments. Tarp surfing is featured on the new Apple iPod Touch commercial, and Keith, who runs TarpSurfing.com for the group, said French-German television station ARTE recently did a piece on Henard for its music program, “Tracks.” The Los Angeles Times also wants to do a story on tarp surfing, and a Japanese TV station asked to film the event Monday.

“When the kids end up seeing how much they’ve raised, they realize, Wow, we really can make a difference,’ ” Keith said.

Santa Cruz Junior Derby Girls choose Grind Out Hunger as 2009 Charity

Things for Grind Out Hunger just keep getting better. The Santa Cruz Derby Girls are a non-profit 501.3c and have been heavily involved in the community and giving back since their inception. Cool enough, that SCDG started a junior league in Santa Cruz County and have a packed roster of over 25 girls vying to be the next Santa Cruz Derby Girl. I was blown away when I get the phone call from Kiki Clash (one of many SCDG angels) that the Santa Cruz Junior Derby Girls had nominated Grind Out Hunger as their 2009 charity.  They invited me down to speak to the girls at the Santa Cruz Roller Palladium during practice one day and I obviously obliged.  As I sat and watched these young girls do the workout with coaches “Candy Hooligan”, “Pixie Painful” and “Liv and let Die” I was exhausted by their efforts. I popped out onto the floor and began to preach the word around Grind Out Hunger. At the end of the talk, I had challenged them to raise 100lbs each and I would reward them with a prize. If the work out was any indication of what the Junior Derby Girls were capable of, I was sure they would rise to the feat.

Second Harvest Food Bank Hunger Fighter Awards Dinner 09

Second Harvest Food Bank Hunger Fighter Award dinner was awesome and the facilities at the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge were incredible.  I always enjoy going to Second Harvest Food Bank functions, it just makes you feel so good hanging out with everyone. Being that this is the 4th year of Grind Out Hunger which works with local Elementary, Middle and High School kids by motivating them to contribute to the Holiday Food Drive. Grind Out Hunger utilizes the Action Sports channel to encourage the youth to raise the most pound per student at their school for over $1200 in prizes from Santa Cruz Skate Shop. I was able to speak once again on behalf of Grind Out Hunger and announce the winning schools and preach the word against hunger. This years winners went over the top once again and made the Grind Out Hunger program have another successful year. The winners of this years skate deck, trophy and bragging rights are:

Elementary School:  Carden School of Santa Cruz $300 prize

Middle School:  Salesian Junior High School $300 prize

High School: Empire Academy$600 prize

Grind Out Hunger Tally Sheet for 2009

Ok, so here it is in all its glory. I did think we would have better success this year but it seems that the recession has taken its toll on our program as well (we barely missed last years totals). 2009 we are going to hit the ground running and get things switched back around. I will announce the official winners after the dinner on March 4th at the Elks Lodge. If you see your school on here and want to be a part of our program please email dk@grindouthunger.org for 2009!

Grind Out Hunger 2008 contest period over..now we tally!

Well another Grind Out Hunger campaign has ended and now we await the winners of this years contest. After speaking at Garden Elementary, Gateway School, Del Mar Elementary, Pajaro Valley High School,  Mission Hill Elementary and a few luncheons, Turkey Tuesdays at Safeway on Soquel and the last appearance at Sav Mart on 41st Ave we did our best to get the word out. Kids seemed responsive and stoked, but with the bad economy and downturn in people having extra this year, I am hopeful we can at least raise a significant amount of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of  Santa Cruz and San Benito counties.  Looking forward to announcing the winners and doing some interviews for our new site that has been so graciously provided by Sleepless Media, if you need anything web see them! Thanks Jon!!! Below are some Grind Out Hunger pictures and articles that made their way out there.
