Santa Cruz Warriors and Mav’riks help Santa Cruz Schools Kick Off 2013 School Food Drives & Celebrate the Successes of Last Year.

All things at Grind Out Hunger have shifted into high gear as we continue to power through our 2013 Holiday School Food Drive and rapidly approach opening night of the 2013-2014 Santa Cruz Warriors season on November 22nd. Yesterday was one of those amazing days when the best of both worlds collided and we had the opportunity to reward two of our top middle schools from last year’s food drive with a special visit from the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Santa Cruz Warriors Director of Public and Community Relations, Matt DeNesnera, players Kiwi Gardner, Kevin Kotzur, and John Allen, and of course Mav’Riks all made a very special appearance at New Brighton Middle School and Aptos Junior High. The team thanked the schools for their amazing performance in last year’s food drive, but more importantly, inspired them to continue to prosper this year.

At each school, students had a chance to ask the players questions. Plenty of eager kids fired them at the team including: “Can I please get a hug from all of you?!” and of course, “When did you start playing basketball?” At New Brighton Middle School, one student asked the players “Did any of you ever go hungry?” Kiwi Gardner, who is just joining the team this season was honest in his response, sharing that there had been some hard times in his life when he didn’t know where his next meal would come from. He went on to encourage the students to keep pushing forward to help the community and each other: “It takes a positive person like you to lend a helping hand. Be proud of each other for helping each other. This is what life is all about.”

Year two of our relationship with the Santa Cruz Warriors thanks to their partnership with Plantronics is shaping up to be an exciting one. With a brand new season comes brand new players who are passionate about making sure that the children of our community do not go hungry. We are so thankful for the opportunity to work with the NBA-D League and can’t wait for the excitement of the season to unfold.
