Grind Out Hunger has a mission to make sure kids lead healthy eating active lifestyles, so when Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab decided to plan a 5K run with health and wellness faire we were all in. Special thanks to Jaimi Ellison for making the event over the top, the dunk tank was extra special with Santa Cruz Mayor Hilary Bryant, Grind Out Hunger’s Danny Keith and Jaimi Ellison Founder of Santa Cruz CORE climbing in and getting dunked hundreds of times by the youth. Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab, a local wellness center, raised over $10,000 to educate and empower the youth to fight hunger in its first annual 5K River Run and Family Health Expo on June 22nd. The race attracted 269 racers who enjoyed the beauty of the San Lorenzo River Levee trail, running to the beach boardwalk and back again.
After the race, friends and family joined the racers to enjoy activities for the whole family with a magician, face painting, carnival booth & other kid-oriented fun. Raffle prizes donated by local businesses were picked every 20 minutes, all proceeds went to support Grind Out Hunger. Mayor Hillary Bryant came out to participate in the 5k and was dunked in the dunk tank along with Founder of Grind Out Hunger Danny Keith and Santa Cruz Core’s very own Jaimi Ellison (founder).
Local bands provided music and food was provided by Lydia’s Organics, Woodstocks pizza, Penny Ice Creamery and The Abbey Coffee Shop, healthy lifestyle choices featuring sports groups & gear, martial arts and fitness demonstrations, massage, health products and nutrition educators, spinal screenings, acupuncture, functional movement evaluations, were all part of the post-race festivities.
Santa Cruz CORE was honored by Second Harvest in 2013 for the raffle they sponsored to fight hunger at last year’s event which raised $2500, providing over 10,000 meals for hungry children in the community. This was quadrupled with over $10,000 raised from this year’s EXPO, sponsorships, raffle, RIVER RUN, and donations.
“We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our community for this event, which allows us to give back”, said Ellison, “Our goal as a business is to create a community of wellness and this event was a beautiful manifestation of that goal.”
