1st place in CCSSS Round 3? Yup…300 Lbs of food donated? Yeah, Marissa got that too.

This past weekend was a big one for Marissa Hushaw. Saturday she competed as the Wild Card in the Andy Finch Invitational at China Peak Mountain Resort. It was an all age event and she held her own. When it comes to competetive sports competing against athletes that are better than you only makes you stronger. Marissa learned a lot from her experience that day…
When Sunday rolled around Marissa had her game face on 100%. Round 3 of the CCSSS (Central Coast Ski/Snowboard Series). In the BoarderX portion of the competition Marissa took 1st place. Following with another 1st place finish in the GS (Giant Slalom) timed event.
Way to go, Marissa!!!

She had a great weekend and even won a signed Andy Finch China Peak snowboard at the end of the day award raffle, she was STOKED! The best part of the weekend for Marissa is she was handed a $100.00 check (300 Pounds of Food) to support her Grind Out Hunger campaign. How rad is that!? So much love and support up on that mountain, its crazy!

Marissa also signed several posters for her up coming Grind Out Hunger Rail Jam on March 31st…they are now placed all over the mountain. Awesome.

Andy Finch Autographed Snowboard... What!? Rad.

Trey Null, Mr. Repair man at China Peak. This guy rocks! Full on GOH supporter!

Great friend and supporter, Garrett Kolofer, Buckhorn Bar & Grill Manager at China Peak Resort. Garrett has known Marissa since she jumped on a snowboard at the age of 6!

Marissa, her boards, and her Rail Jam poster. Perfection.

Body Glove Surfers Supporting Efforts of Grind Out Hunger

The Body Glove Surf Team is currently on a California meet and greet tour. One of their stops happened to be the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, birthplace of Grind Out Hunger….

Team members, Jamie O’Brien, Anthony Walsh, Jamie O’Brien, Cheyne Magnusson, Nate Yeomans, and Alex Gray arrived at the shop around 7pm. We chatted with the guys, ate some pizza, and briefly explained to them the mission of Grind Out Hunger and where it is headed. Stoked on the program, the guys agreed to collectively sign a skate deck for us…Rad! This one is a wall hanger for sure!

The guys did a signing for all of the kids that showed up to meet them that night. They said that this stop on their tour so far was the the most sucessful one they had been to. Full of kids and enthusiastic energy, it was a great night for the youth of Santa Cruz and for Grind Out Hunger.

Thanks guys for coming out and supporting the shop, the youth, and Grind Out Hunger!
See you next time!

Rad Wednesday and A Visit From China Peak

Ok lets start this blog post off right…Why was Wednesday Rad you ask?

MARISSA PASSED THE $2000 MARK ON HER DONATION METER.
Yeah, that means 6,000 pounds of food. 8,000 meals.
Thank you to all of the people that have supported her and donated to her campaign.

Sooooo much happened yesterday. We finalized the “Marissa Hushaw Grind Out Hunger Rail Jam” poster. Its already started floating around the web. Another blog will be posted with more detail about that event soon.
GOH team and Marissa met up to hang out and so Marissa could pick up a stack of posters to put around town and up at China Peak Mountain Resort. Marissa kindly signed a few of the posters, one of which is now framed and in the current GOH HQ office. Thanks, Marissa!

We also had a great surprise last night, Trey Lull, repair technician at China Peak along with Brittany Kitchen, snowboard instructor and competitor drove to Santa Cruz to pay us a visit.
Trey Lull….this guy is da man! He and his crew donate a portion of their tips from their work to Marissa’s Campaign. They have donated hundreds of pounds of food already through monetary donations.  We met up at Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, chatted for a big then took a walk down to Pleasure point to check out the sunset and the surf.

Oh and we forgot to mention that the BodyGlove Surf Team decided to stop by Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop last night. China Peak + Marissa Hushaw + Pro Surfers + Grind Out Hunger + Santa Cruz = an amazing evening.

Thanks again for everyone’s support!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARISSA!

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARISSA!

Now that snow has been falling so much has been going in in the world of Hunger Fighter, Marissa Hushaw. This past weekend Marissa went up to China Peak to compete in Round 2 of CCSSS. She took 1st place in heats 1 and 2 BoarderX with a 2nd place finishing the final (Leading points now for the season).  She is blazing fast and has won 1st in the CCSSS GS competition. Marissa also took the 1st Wild Card for the Pro Snowboarder Andy Finch Invitational Slope Style Park event coming up (Female division). She was stoked when they called her over and gave the card and 1st entry.
Congrats on the wins, Marissa!

We sat down and asked Marissa “why are you so passionate about Grind Out Hunger?”. Her answer was nothing less than inspirational.
Check it out:

“Grind Out Hunger is first about showing kids that they can make a difference. Not just in their own lives, but they can change others. Learning the fact that one out of four people in my own community are malnourished, and go hungry every day really got to me. Not only does Grind Out Hunger provide nutritious food, but it provides a source of education to teach people how to choose and consume healthy foods. One tiny act of kindness from kids or adults will NOT go unrecognized. It makes you feel great when you know that you are helping to feed the people who live in your own community. Not only does it give them hope and strength, but it gives you community hope as well. Hope can be contagious! It spreads all throughout ones self and rubs off on others. One tiny spark of hope can make a colossal difference. I know that I have the power to make a difference, but I know that I can’t do it alone.”
